This isn't Dead Space. Go for the body, ignore the extremities; aim for the chest or groin, but groin is preferred due to having less armor, sometimes.

If you aim for the head and you separate the zombie's brain from its body, it is still alive enough to kill you AND you trying to shoot a nonexistent head will waste your ammo and time. Go for the body, ignore the extremities; aim for the chest or groin, but groin is preferred due to having less armor if the zombies don't have a bullet protection vest.


Once you've successfully downed a zombie, shoot them a few more times for good measure. Once they're good and incapacitated, approach them with a sharp melee weapon and target their chest. This will being the process of heart removal, the only way to permanently kill an infected.
